Mission Statement

The Meals on Wheels mission is to provide hot, nutritious meals to the homebound elderly that allows them to live in their home with an improved quality of life.

Description

Meals are delivered by volunteers, using their own vehicles to take a noon meal to homebound senior citizens. There are 38 routes throughout Buncombe County and approximately 300 volunteers who share the responsibility of caring for the recipients. These volunteers are, more often than not, the only human contact the isolated elderly person will have with the outside world. Volunteers also deliver pet food, elderly nutrition drinks, emergency snow packs, and birthday flowers to our clients.

I really enjoyed delivering Meals On Wheels and met so many nice seniors who were so grateful to see me at their door. It only took about 2 hours out of my day, but it was time well spent. I've lived in Asheville for 15 years and found new neighborhoods I didn't know existed. Can't wait to go again next month!
