Mission Statement

The Puppetry Arts Institute's mission is to preserve and promote puppetry through education and entertainment for all ages

Description

The organization was established in 2001 as part of a dream of local puppeteers, led by Diane Houk, to share this art form with our community. A board of directors meets quarterly to oversee the organization. The Puppetry Arts Institute (PAI) is located in a 3,000 square foot, handicapped accessible building in the Englewood area of Independence, MO. This space includes the Hazelle Rollins Puppet Museum. Hazelle Rollins was a local businesswoman who owned a nationally recognized puppet production company from 1932 to 1975. The space also includes a puppet research library, puppetry performance and workshop area, and offices. The PAI has a website (www.hazelle.org), a quarterly newsletter, a mailing list, email list, and press release list for publicity. The building is open 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday. The PAI schedules monthly puppet shows and daily interactive workshops to suit the requests of youth, school, senior, and family groups.

Very fun place! You put on an apron and assist children in painting their puppets. You make sure they have the paint colors they need and help them dry their puppets when they are done and hand sew an outfit on. Everyone then goes into the theatre room where there is a puppet stage and the children get to perform with their puppets!
