Mission Statement

The mission of Citizens for Homeless Relief, Inc. (CFHR) is to promote the general welfare of the homeless in Coffee, Franklin, Moore, and Bedford counties in Tennessee by being their advocate, providing for their immediate needs of food and physical shelter, providing referral service, and connecting with other community resources. CFHR acknowledges each person as a sacred being with spiritual as well as physical & emotional needs, and attempts to address the needs of the whole person. A basic tenet is that each person be treated with dignity and respect as a human being.

Description

CFHR/Shepherd's House remains full almost all the time, housing and feeding 14 or more persons a day, providing transportation to other shelters, connecting residents with agencies & individuals for help with legal & medical issues, encouraging and providing hope to the homeless, whether those in a new crisis or those who have a chronic problem. In 2010 we made significant structural changes in the layout of the homeless shelter, increasing the safety of the operation and providing better management oversight. The office was relocated to provide greater visibility into the rest of the house, permitting the house to be divided with men at one end and women and children at the other end. Procedures were clarified and streamlined for handling calls for help. The board became more actively involved in the organization, both as volunteers and in developing documentation and infrastructure. CFHR witnessed a greater involvement from the community, both in the way of volunteers and a broader base of church support. Volunteers came forth to organize food, linens, clothes, and supplies such that resources are more effectively utilized.
