Mission Statement

Provide food and medical outreach volunteer aid to the needy in Louisa County, Virginia

Description

We provide assistance through six successful programs:

COMMUNITY CUPBOARD provides monthly allotments of food at no charge to income-eligible residents. Basic staples like canned fruit, vegetables, protein-rich beans and peanut butter are supplemented with fresh meats, produce, and dairy in order to provide clients with a good variety of foods to create nutritious meals. In 2013 we will serve 975+ families (more than 2,200 individuals) each month.

EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY provides a week's worth of groceries to families faced with unexpected crisis, such as job loss or medical emergency. Families may receive an emergency food supply at no charge a maximum of two times during a six-month period. We expect to serve 3,000 individuals this year.

MEALS ON WHEELS, in partnership with Central Virginia Food Bank, delivers meals each week day to home-bound County residents. Chilled, prepared meals accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions and are easily heated at home. Volunteer drivers provide vital personal safety checks. We will deliver 10,000+ meals in 2013 to 30 clients.

CHILDREN'S FEEDING PROGRAM, in cooperation with Louisa County Public Schools and FeedMore, assists children who are at risk for hunger over the weekend and during the summer when school is not in session and food is unavailable to them through other programs. 290 children will receive this service in 2013.

MEDICAL OUTREACH SERVICES helps citizens who live below federal poverty levels but are not qualified for government health programs. Through this program they receive medication assistance and medical care referrals. We expect to make 1,800 referrals and provide 375 free prescriptions for 35 clients.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL services are provided constantly during working hours for walk-in and telephone inquiries. We connect clients with other area services that relate to employment, homelessness, and a wide variety of human service issues. A conservative estimate for 2013 is 12,000 contacts.
