Our Mission Make-A-Wish's mission is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illness. Our chapter directly serves the children and families residing in San Diego and Imperial counties. Each year, we grant over 200 wishes for children experiencing critical illnesses in our community. To learn more about Make-A-Wish San Diego and explore our current volunteer opportunities, check out our website: https://wish.org/sandiego/volunteer Role Overview In teams of two, Wish Granters meet with a wish child and their family to the child determine their one true wish. After the child determines their wish, Wish Granters act as a liaison between the family and our staff to help communicate wish details back to the family. Wish Granters also keep the magic alive for the wish kid with creative enhancements throughout the wish process and by organizing a celebration just before the child's wish comes true to send them off on their wish experience. All volunteers are asked to commit an average 20-30 hours over a span of nine to twelve months to see one wish from start to finish. After that, we ask that Wish Granters take on two wishes per year. Wish Discovery Visits may take place at the wish family's home, at our office in Kearny Mesa, virtually over Zoom/WhatsApp/FaceTime, or at a neutral location such as a park, local library, or local restaurant. Typically, visits are scheduled on evenings or weekends based on availability of the volunteers and wish family. Join the Volunteer Team We are currently seeking bilingual volunteers to join our wish granting team so that we can best serve our wish families. Volunteers must be a minimum of 21 years of age and able to complete and pass a criminal background check. Wish Granters must complete an in-depth training on Saturday, March 1st in order to become a Wish Granter (training will be held in-person in Central San Diego). If you have passion for helping children and a drive to give back to the community, this would be a great volunteer opportunity for you! Ready to become a Wish Granter?
