Description

Crossroads Folkloric Arts Association is nonprofit cultural arts organizations dedicated to creating opportunities for dialogue and promoting knowledge. Prior to the Associations conception, advocates and practitioners of traditional African/Afro-Cuban cultural and religion met to have open forums to discuss the challenges that they are faced when teaching, performing, demonstrating traditional African-based culture as well as being able to access opportunities of interest for their local community on a regular basis in their purest forms in metropolitan areas of Chicago.

Incorporated in 2002, the organization sole purpose is the development of public programs designed to encourage and increase levels of appreciation and to build awareness of the folkloric interpretations of African-based traditions as found throughout the world. The association meets at regularly quarterly meetings to address these concerns in addition to those in which the community may and has become supporting base for promoting and presenting positive images of them.

Today, the Association offers classes, lectures on the philosophies and culture as well as folkloric training in art, song, rhythm, and dance, primarily those of Africa and the Caribbean. Of the events that are hosted by the Association, each requires collaborations and/or donations to offset expense costs and other administrative obligations. Operating funds for the Association is collected by membership dues and funds are raised at cultural events.
