Mission Statement

New York Classical Theatre's mission is to reinvigorate and create audiences for the theatre by presenting free and accessible productions of popular classics and forgotten masterpieces in non-traditional public spaces throughout New York City.

Description

The primary component of New York Classical Theatre is accessibility and our signature staging style, Panoramic Theatre.

Each season New York Classical Theatre presents free productions of classical theatre in Central Park, Battery Park and the World Financial Center--a total of 56 performances every season. Each play is adapted to work in harmony with architecture of the public space and the audience follows the production from place to place, as the plot unfolds from scene to scene. The separation between the performance and the audience then vanishes, and spectators experience the play happening all around them as if they were part of the drama itself.

By removing plays from traditional performing venues, we serve a broad demographic of our urban community, spanning all ages, ethnicities, income and educational levels.

All rehearsals take place in the venue, encouraging our audience to actively observe the evolution of a professional production while demystifying the language and poetry of classical theatre.

Our popular family educational workshops accompany each of our productions before selected performances. As with all our programming, workshops are open and free to the public.

New York Classical Theatre firmly believes that the themes of the classics remain as relevant to our lives today as they were to their original audience. Through the lens of classical theatre we come to better understand human nature and our role in contemporary life.
