Mission Statement

The mission of the YMI Cornerstone Mentoring Program is to support youth in fifth through ninth grades during the transitions from elementary to middle school, and middle school to high school, by cultivating positive personal relationships and community involvement.

Description

YMI is enhancing DYCD Cornerstone Programs located in 25 New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) community centers to support and implement a mentoring Component as part of their programs.

Our site serves 12 mentees in fifth through ninth grades. Mentoring will take place in a group format;however the maximum number of youth matched with an individual mentor is four. Each mentor will commit to at least one and one-half hours with his/her group each week. Activities will take place at the program site, unless otherwise stated due to a trip, training or other activitiy. The scope of the activities is determined by mentors, mentees, and the program coordinator. Activities can range from sports, cooking, arts and crafts, academics, discussions, and more.

The program will participate in two one-day community service projects. The first will be a large event, planned by DYCD involving mentors and mentees from all 25 sites. The second will be site based, involving the mentors and mentees at our site.
