SAWERA’s mission is to support and empower the South Asian community experiencing domestic violence in Oregon. We promote the independence and dignity of South Asian women through education, empowerment and solidarity.
Our twin goals are to provide direct services to victims and to conduct outreach and education in South Asian communities. We support and publicize women’s organizations in South Asia whose main goal is to empower women. Additionally, we join women’s groups in the United States and in South Asia as catalysts for social change.
SAWERA, the South Asian Women’s Empowerment and Resource Alliance, was founded in 1997 by members of the community to help South Asian women who were experiencing domestic violence. They found that language barriers, cultural misconceptions and immigration concerns prevented these women from seeking help. Pronounced "sah-way-reh," our name also translates to "morning" in at least two South Asian languages. Morning symbolizes a new beginning and the dawn of a new era for South Asian women.
SAWERA is dedicated to serving women and children in abusive relationships and offers culturally specific services to remove the stigma around domestic violence. Additionally, we join women’s groups around this country as catalysts for social change. At SAWERA, we provide advocacy, empowerment and solidarity in a safe environment.
