Mission Statement

The IUCN Washington D.C. Office works with IUCN Members in the United States, global institutions, and the U.S. donor community to further conservation worldwide.

Description

Washington, D.C. Office

The IUCN Washington, D.C. Office helps provide vital linkages for IUCN Members and partners around the world to key U.S.-based institutions, such as the U.S. Government and its agencies, the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations, and other organizations. The Office also hosts a number of IUCN staff, programs, and initiatives, working on global conservation and sustainable development issues, including:

  • green financial mechanisms such as REDD and REDD+
  • marine and polar initiatives related to the Arctic, the High Seas, the Sargasso Sea,coral reefs and marine protected areas
  • climate change and related issues including Blue Carbon
  • gender and social policy
  • the Global Islands Partnership
  • international environmental policy and governance

The 85 Members of IUCN in the United States, with whom the Washington, D.C. Office works, include the U.S. Government (represented by the Department of State), six U.S. government agencies, and numerous international conservation organizations, U.S. conservation organizations, universities, zoos and aquariums, grantmakers, and other organizations working in the areas of conservation and sustainable development. As part of the IUCN One Programme concept of working together to maximize program results, the Office also works with representatives of IUCN Commissions, which are active in the United States.
