Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
Incorporated in 2008, Blessings in a Backpack is a national organization that provides weekend food to 79,000 elementary school children at 800 schools in 45 states and Washington D.C. During the school week these children are fed by the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Program. But what do they eat on the weekends? They are at risk of going up to 65 hours without the nutrition their bodies and brains need to develop. As a leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings in a Backpack strives to ensure these children don’t go hungry on the weekends by empowering individuals and communities to take action. Each program site is led by passionate volunteers who secure food, fill and distribute backpacks each week to children who face food insecurity.
