Description

Methodist minister William Booth founded the Salvation Army in 1865 in London, England. Today it provides a wide range of social, medical, educational and other services in over 100 countries. In the United States, The Salvation Army assists 30 million people. Over 60,000 people are helped in Rochester, New York each year. The Salvation Army has been part of the Rochester charitable community since 1885. The familiar Red Kettles at Christmas first appeared in 1900 as The Salvtion Army began publicly collecting donations for the impoverished. The Salvation Army plays a critical role in assisting struggling families and individuals in Monroe County. Whether it's emergency shelter, counseling or providing clothing, the helping hand of The Salvation Army is a tremendous asset to people seeking to improve their lives. Today, The Salvation Army provides a variety of services to low-income and impoverished people within the community including: Emergency Family Assistance, Shelters for Homeless Men, Women and Youth, Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation, After-School Programs, Summer Day Camp, Job Training and Educational Programs, Emergency and Disaster Services and complete Meal Services 365 days of the year. Acclaimed management expert, Peter Drucker describes The Salvation Army as "America's most effective charity." Drucker gives The Salvation Army top marks for "clarity of mission, ability to innovate, measurable results, dedication and putting money to maximum use. No other charity even comes close." For so many years now, The Salvation Army has played a key role in helping curtail the rate of poverty in the Rochester area. We have delivered services to thousands of individuals who find themselves at risk of becoming homeless and falling through the cracks. Through our support programs, we have been successful in helping individuals achieve their self-sufficiency. We offer help to people who need physical, emotional, and spiritual support.
