Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. The Camp Fire in Northern California -- one of three blazing across the state -- is the most destructive in state history. The mission of Ananya Dance Theatre, is to create and present dance theater that emerges from and exists at the intersection of artistic excellence and social justice.
We pursue excellence in our artistry to forge pathways that generate forces of strength and beauty, galvanize strong communities, and embody a philosophy of possibility and liberation in a shared humanity.
Ananya Dance Theatre is a company of women artists, primarily of color, diverse in age, race, nationality, and sexual orientation, and is a pioneering force in contemporary Indian dance.
Inspired by the commitment and passion that infuse women’s movements worldwide, our artists create original dance theater that reflects women’s ordinary lives and extraordinary dreams to generate strength and beauty, galvanize community, and invoke broader questions about social justice.
Taken from the Bengali word ananya (naanya), "like whom there is no other," ADT is the standard-bearer for dance that articulates ideas and expresses women’s lives to mobilize social change.
Our aesthetic is embodied in the term Yorchha. Yorchha connects three Indian traditions of movement with a philosophy basedon Shawngram (struggle/resistance), Aanch (heat/desire), and Daak (call to action).
Initiated as a community-based ensemble in 2004, ADT received its non-profit status in 2006. It has produced eight concert seasons in the Twin Cities and its work has been presented in 11 other U.S. cities and 10 other countries.
