Mission Statement

Fayetteville State University’s Office of College Access Programs (OCAP) mission is to encourage and assist youth who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education with preparation for, entry into, and completion of a post-secondary education. The office comprises of GEAR UP, Educational Talent Search (TRiO) and Upward Bound (TRiO), which are federally funded college access programs.

Description

AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. The Office provides a broad range of high-quality college preparatory services to students, parents, and educators. As an AmeriCorps VISTA you can:

•Build and cultivate community partnerships and resources

•Develop a College Access Marketing Plan

•Establish programming designed to assist low-income students with academic performance

•Develop a community advisory committee comprising of community agencies, parents and students

•Establish a parenting institute that meets the needs of parents to better assist their children in school

•Create male initiatives that support academic performance of African American males

In each case, you’ll be strengthening the Office of College Access Programs so it can continue to serve the needs of the community (youth, parents, schools, etc.) once AmeriCorps VISTA’s support has ended.
