Description
Greater Houston Soap Box Derby (GHSBD) was formed in 1994 as a charitable, non-profit, tax-exempt 501(C) 3 corporation run by volunteers for the benefit of today's youth. Beginning in 2010, Harris County Pct. 3 Hockley Recreational Complex's Derby Track has served as the new home for all of GHSBD’s events. The park is located in the northwest corner of the county next to the Pct. 3 Hockley Community Center on Old Washington Road in Hockley.
In addition to conducting sanctioned races for youth in all three established derby divisions, the GHSBD promotes racing for children with disabilities by participating in the nationally recognized Super Kids program. Harris County Pct. 3, headed by Commissioner Steve Radack, has constructed eight specially built two-seat, dual-control derby cars for use by Super Kids. Trained co-pilots accompany each Super Kid down the hill to provide steering and braking assistance as needed.
