Mission Statement

NOCIRC of Michigan is a non-profit, consumer rights advocacy group helping parents understand that circumcision is harmful to their children.

We educate parents and health care providers in Michigan about the harm of circumcision and about the proper care of intact genitals. We protect consumers from fraudulent medical claims. We actively promote the benefits of normal genitalia and foreskin restoration.

We know the removal of normal, healthy tissue from a child’s genitals--in the name of medicine, religion or social custom--results in a loss of sexual function and is a violation of human rights.

We are a group of dedicated consumer activists and health care professionals. We are committed to effective education, advocacy and activism on behalf of children to protect them from harm. We are part of a worldwide movement to end all forms of male and female genital mutilation.

Description

NOCIRC of Michigan is the state chapter of the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers, which was founded in 1986. NOCIRC is internationally recognized as the center of expertise on circumcision. We are a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization of health care professionals and children's health activists. Each year, we exhibit at numerous conferences, health fairs, and baby shows in the state, including at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. We survey healthcare professionals and provide them with free information pamphlets to distribute to their patients.

We have been volunteers for NOCIRC of Michigan for some time and it is a very rewarding experience. Norm Cohen is a very dedicated, well-organized and helpful Director. There are a variety of events for volunteers to table and provide opportunities to hand out educational and tasteful pamphlets and related material that explain why babies should not be circumcised. We help parents and expectant parents learn that circumcision is a completely unnecessary procedure that carries with it great potential harm to babies, even when they reach adulthood. Most of our events are baby fairs at various hospitals and Tummy to Toddler events that help NOCIRC of Michigan reach young expectant parents as well as grandparents, sisters, and friends of people who are future parents. Our two largest fun-filled events are the July Ann Arbor Art Fair and Detroit's Dally in the Alley. We reach large numbers of people with our message and have satifying dialogues with interested people. Mary T.
