Mission Statement

Reef Doctora^??s mission is to use proven science methods to monitor coral reef ecosystems, train local students and reduce reef damage whilst helping the Ifaty community work together to preserve and manage of their reef resources for future generations.

Description

ReefDoctor are a small not-for-profit organisation based in SW Madagascar in a small fishing village called Ifaty. We are primarily a coral reef research, education and conservation organisation, though we do complete work with local communities to raise coral reef awareness and promote sustainable use of marine resources. Coral reef health, sedimentation rates within the Bay of Ranobe, coral spawning, fish diversity and fisheries studies are just some of the range of research currently underway. Having been based in Ifaty since 2001 we are fully established with a functioning dive operation (boat, dive equipment, safety assessments complete etc), five permanent staff (Malagasy and international) and a small volunteer programme (we receive 4/5 volunteer research assistants every 3 months, we feel this number is appropriate for the small fishing village where we are located and facilitates maximum information transfer from staff to volunteers as the ratio of staff to volunteers is generally 1:1)
