Mission Statement

We, the Citizens of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, associate ourselves for the purpose of providing a local forum and home for the arts, through the maintainance of residential and work studios, galleries, and performance space. Exhibitions and performances in the forum will be unjuried and open to the general public. Our facilities and services are made available to all artists who need a place to exhibit, perform, or create their original art work, especially those who cannot obtain space to exhibit or perform from traditional sources because of financial or other limitations.

Description

AS220 has existed since summer 1985. "AS" stands for Art Space or Alternative Space (depending on personal preference), and "220" commemorates the original Weybosset Street address. AS220 is a 501(c)3 corporation (certified nonprofit) with a Board of Directors. Its office employs 4 full-timers and 1 part-timer. The general operation of AS220 is further assisted by 30+ volunteers.

AS220's program (7 nights a week) includes monthly gallery openings, music (jazz, rock, folk, etc.), film, theatre, and poetry and other spokenword performances. It also hosts such events as Action Speaks, a weekly panel discussion of vital topics by prominent community figures, and theYouth Arts Conference, an introduction to the arts for preadolescent children from any and all RI public schools.
