SKYLAB works toward achieving this mission through providing state-of-the-art technology equipment, creative youth-driven projects, ongoing professional mentoring, and intensive leadership training programs. SKYLAB Youth Production Studio uses a youth development model that recognizes young people as valuable assets with important ideas and therefore involves youth in all aspects of program development and implementation. The name SKYLAB, for example, was created out of a brainstorm session with the youth in which we strove to synthesize the concepts of à ¢??expanding our horizonsà ¢?? (SKY) and à ¢??the community and facility which provides the means for this actionà ¢?? (LAB). SKYLAB youth work within a safe, creative, and nurturing space in which they are encouraged to develop their own ideas and projects as well as work in teams to ask questions and present creative solutions to community problems.
