Mission Statement

The Palouse Discovery Science Center is bringing hands-on science and learning experiences to people of all ages. We are a non-profit organization whose purpose is to further the public's understa nding of science and technology through the use of educational programs, exhibits, teaching collections, and activities which emphasize the physical participation of individuals. The Center's offerings will support and enhance science in both formal (such as school systems) and informal situations involved with life-long learning.

Description

In 1999, a group of forward thinking individuals in the Palouse region formed the Palouse Discovery Science Center as an outreach enterprise to bring hands-on science learning to the community. From 1999-2002, the PDSC operated as a science center without walls and provided a variety of science outreach activities at local venues. In 2002, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) provided an 11,000-square-foot facility to house the science center. In 2006, SEL renewed its support of the science center, enabling PDSC to purchase the current 11,200-square-foot building in the Port of Whitman. After renovations, the center moved into its permanent home and celebrated its second grand opening in January 2008. As a non-profit organization, the PDSC strives to further the public understanding of science and technology and enhancing scientific literacy by making science fun and accessible through the use of 75 interactive exhibits, educational programs, teaching collections and science education.
