Founded in 1999, Life Rolls On Foundation is dedicated to assisting and inspiring young people affected by spinal cord injury and uses action sports as a platform to demonstrate infinite possibilities despite paralysis. In addition to providing unique quality of life programs, Life Rolls On fosters spinal cord injury awareness and offers outreach to individuals and their families at the onset of injury.
LRO Founder and Director of National Outreach Jesse Billauer was only 17-years-old with a promising professional surfing career ahead of him when a wave pushed him headfirst into a shallow sandbar, fracturing his neck and severing his spinal cord, leaving him a quadriplegic. Despite obvious limitations of his condition, Jesse has resumed living life to its fullest, including returning to the ocean to surf. His inspirational story has been featured in the movie "Step into Liquid" and has been made into a feature documentary, titled "Jesse’s Story." He also tours the country as a motivational speaker, encouraging people to never give up regardless of any obstacle set before them. Jesse’s motto that "life rolls on" eventually led to the formation of Life Rolls On Foundation.
LRO’s award-winning signature program, "They Will Surf Again," is a powerful series of bi-coastal events that empower paraplegics and quadriplegics to experience the freedom and mobility of surfing a wave with the assistance of adaptive surfboards and dedicated volunteers. Through quality of life programs and spinal cord injury awareness campaigns, LRO proudly impacts the lives of more than 100,000 people each year. In 2007, the organization received its first EMMY nomination for Best National Public Service Announcement.
