Mission Statement

The mission of the Rosewell Foundation is to preserve, study, and present to the public the historic ruin of the Rosewell mansion in Gloucester, Virginia.

Description

One of colonial Virginia's grandest mansions, Rosewell was constructed 1725-1738 and was gutted by fire in 1916. Four massive chimneys, one wall, and a cellar vault are now silent witnesses to history. Stabilized, but not rebuilt, Rosewell allows visitors to inspect 18th-century brickwork from a perspective no intact building can offer. Its setting inspires the imagination to recreate Rosewell as known by three generations of the Page family. A nearby Visitor Center houses an exhibit, an introductory video, and archaeology lab.
