Advancing wildlife protection through community cooperation and support

Description

Wildlife Guardians is a U.S. charitable nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the survival of the African lion and Africa's other imperiled native species in their natural habitats. Wildlife Guardians accomplishes its goals by funding projects that reduce human-wildlife conflict, advance related social and scientific research and policy, and educate the public on the plight and value of saving imperiled species.

Established in late 2011, Wildlife Guardians awarded its first grant in 2012 to the innovative Lion Guardians program, which in just a few years, has done an amazing job of protecting lions in Kenya where others have failed. Their approach -- to hire Maasai warriors who traditionally demonstrate their bravery by killing a lion and train them instead to work with their fellow tribesman to build support for lion conservation -- has virutually eliminated the killing of lions in areas where the program is active. With the help of Wildlife Guardians, this program can now expand its efforts into other parts of East Africa.
