Mission Statement

The mission of Sheffield Place is to empower homeless mothers and their children to heal from their trauma and help them become self-sufficient.

Description

Sheffield Place, the only treatment and transitional living center in Kansas City that focuses exclusively on homeless families, advances the mission "To empower homeless mothers and their children to health from their trauma and help them become self-sufficient."

Founded in 1991, the agency features an average length of stay of six months, provides intensive mental health and addiction recovery services, delivers all services onsite where the families live, and ensures that all services are trauma-informed.

Each year, Sheffield Place serves homeless families through four programs: Residential, Residential Clinical, Aftercare, and Permanent Housing services. In 2013, 64% of mothers improved their mental health, increased their education/job skills, and secured stable housing.

Two-thirds of the clients are children ages 0 through 12 years. By healing from severe trauma, the children gain the tools they need to lead healthy, productive lives, and break the generational cycle of poverty, homelessness, addiction, and violence.
