Mission Statement
T&W was founded in 1967: 1) to form an association of artists to develop and carry out programs designed to foster creative and relevant ways of teaching literature and writing; 2) to develop a collaboration between classroom teachers and professional artists; 3) to involve teachers, students and writers in the development of new English curriculum to meet the needs of students in urban, suburban and rural school systems; and 4) to create and distribute books and materials on teaching imaginative writing.
Description
T&W was founded in 1967 by a group of writers and educators who believed that professional writers could make a unique contribution to the teaching of writing and literature. Those responsible for shaping T&W's program and philosophy over the years include Grace Paley, Muriel Rukeyser, Herb Kohl, June Jordan, Robert Silvers, Anne Sexton, Kenneth Koch, Victor Hernà  à ¡ndez Cruz, Ron Padgett, Rosellen Brown, and Phillip Lopate. Today T&W does the following: à ¢?à ¢ Provides direct services to students and teachers: T&W sends professional writers into schools and community sites to teach imaginative writing and conducts professional development workshops for teachers. Through our Urban Word NYC program we hold free after-school writing workshops for teens. à ¢?à ¢ Publishes and distributes professional development materials: T&W publishes over 100 book titles and a bimonthly magazine on teaching writing, and distributes these publications internationally. à ¢?à ¢ Operates a community literary arts center in New York City: The Center for Imaginative Writing in NYC is a meeting space for students, teachers, writers, and the general public; à ¢?à ¢ Conducts Internet programs for teachers, writers, and students: A national forum on teaching writing, WriteNet (www.writenet.org) includes book reviews, interviews, literary and educational resources, and an online writing workshop for teens.
