The mission of the Playwrights’ Center is to champion playwrights and plays to build upon a living theater that demands new and innovative works. One of the most generous and well-respected organizations serving playwrights and new play development in the country, the Playwrights’ Center supports artists, the artistic process, and the path to the desired outcome--production. Our programs offer playwrights more than a reading and a pat on the back; we aspire to fuel the American theater.
The Ruth Easton Lab: The Ruth Easton Lab is where our affiliated playwrights come together in 10- to 30-hour new play development workshops with paid artistic collaborators to develop their new plays. It is a true laboratory: our playwrights are provided the resources they need and the freedom to ask questions, take risks, and test new ideas in collaboration with other professional artists. The Lab moves new plays closer to being production-ready. We develop upwards of 50 new plays per year in the Lab.
Partnerships: The Center partners with theaters locally and across the U.S. that seek to produce new plays by our affiliated writers but need additional resources to do so. These partnerships provide all-important gateways to production for new work. The Center also collaborates with cultural and social service organizations to use the powerful medium of theater to communicate with their constituencies while serving our writers with opportunities to approach their writing from a new perspective.
Membership:The largest open-membership program for playwrights in the country, the Center’s individual membership program provides access to resources, career development, and a network of peers for over 1,150 playwrights in Minnesota, across the country, and around the world.
