Mission Statement

The Piatigorsky Foundation is dedicated to making live classical music part of the fabric of everyday life for communities throughout the United States.

Description

Background: The Foundation was established in 1990 in honor of the renowned Russian cellist, Gregor Piatigorsky (1903-1976). Piatigorsky believed that music is not a luxury for the elite few but a necessity of life for all. Since its inception, the Foundation has presented more than 2,750 concerts, bringing live classical music to thousands of people who would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend such performances. Concert Tours: The Piatigorsky Foundation fulfills its mission through state-based concert tours. A tour consists of eight concerts, typically performed by two musicians. It is common for the Foundation to return to the same communities each season, making live classical music an ongoing party of community life. Venues include retirement communities, schools, churches, synagogues, workplaces, prisons, libraries, museums and community centers - virtually anywhere people gather. The hour-long concerts take place in relaxed and intimate settings. The musicians introduce their programs giving helpful insights into the works that they will perform. The performances are both entertaining and educational. Areas Served: During the 2008-2010 concert season, The Piatigorsky Foundation presented over 200 concerts in 19 states.
