(1) PROMOTE THE ORGANIZATION OF LOCAL AWAKE IN AMERICA GROUPS
Awake In America plans to promote and assist in the organization of local sleep disorder groups across the United States. Awake In America will provide individuals with information on how to successfully start a local Awake In America chapter in their community and give the local chapters access to Awake In America's website and other resources. Local groups will operate independently of Awake In America, but will share a common goal of educating and increasing public awareness about sleep and sleep disorders. Group coordinators will have access to a secure area on the web site that contains timely information they will be able to share with their individual groups.
(2) ASSIST INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT INSURANCE OR FINANCIAL MEANS OBTAIN SLEEP STUDIES AND/OR CPAP OR Bi-LEVEL EQUIPMENT
Awake In America has been successfully operating two programs to assist individuals in need with obtaining sleep studies, and, when necessary, CPAP or Bi-Level equipment, including masks, tubing, and humdifiers, to treat their apnea.
(3) CREATE AWARENESS AMONG THE GENERAL PUBLIC, BUSINESSES, AND CORPORATIONS
Awake In America plans to work on creating awareness of sleep disorders among the general public, businesses, and corporations around the country. These efforts will be primarily be directed to human resource departments of various corporations and businesses, as well as advertising when possible, and public service announcements.
(4) CREATE AWARENESS OF SLEEP DISORDERS AMONG ALLIED HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
Awake In America plans to work on creating awareness of sleep disorders among allied health professionals around the country.
These efforts will be primarily aimed at primary care physicians, to help educate them about warning signs of sleep disorders, as well as help them better identify people at greater risk of sleep disorders, as well as other mitigating conditions, such as stroke, high blood pressure, heart attack, congestive heart failure, mood swings, excessive daytime, sleepiness, and sexual dysfunction.
Awake In America will seek to work with others who have direct contact with the identified healthcare professionals to get accurate, up-to-date information to their offices, as well as working to get patient education information in the offices, as well.
(5) FUNDRAISING MEMBERSHIPS
Awake In America plans to offer fundraising memberships to individuals and corporations. Based on the amount of the contribution made to Awake in America.
(6) CREATE AWARENESS AMONG GOVERNMENT AND ELECTED OFFICIALS
Awake In America plans to work on creating awareness of sleep disorders among government and elected officials around the country. Government officials would be, for example, those involved with various departments of transportation, state police agencies, and health and human services offices. Elected officials would be, for example, mayors, city council members, governors, and senators. These efforts will be primarily aimed at raising the awareness of sleep deprivation and sleep disorders as prime sources of fatigue, as well as helping to address issues such as fatigued driving, fatigue-related accidents, and other such issues that impact society as a whole. Another area of education and awareness would be to help increase awareness that early detection and treatment can lead to healthier citizens, thereby helping reduce potential future burdens to society.
(7) AWAKE IN AMERICA WEB SITE
Awake In America hopes to educate and increase public awareness about sleep, sleep deprivation, and sleep disorders by maintaining an organizational web site that will act as a resource center for people suffering from sleep disorders.
The web site will provide, for example, information, resources, and tools about sleep disorders, proper diagnosis, travel, and insurance issues; self-quizzes; tips and hints for those already diagnosed with sleep disorders; and information about available treatments for sleep related disorders.
In support of its goal of education and increasing public awareness, Awake In America plans to keep on top of the current legislative and legal environment with regard to sleep disorders. Awake In America hopes to provide a unified voice for its members of the sleep community before State and local government officials, as well as the Federal government on issues involving sleep.
Awake In America is a national non-profit Pennsylvania-based corporation focused on sleep and sleep disorder issues.
The primary mission of Awake In America is to help others around the United States launch successful community education and support groups.
Awake In America is also involved in educational outreach to health care providers; elected officials and other representatives at various levels of government; public education and awareness programs; corporate and business outreach, education, and awareness; and legislative advocacy.
