Mission Statement

Supportive Neighborhood Services for Seniors. 'Helping Our Senior Neighbors Stay Healthy and Independent In the Homes They Love'.

The Goal of the Program - we strive to support senior members of the Macalester-Summit Hill community who choose to remain living in their homes by engaging community strengths and offering accessible health, volunteer and caregiver support services.

The Macalester-Summit Hill Seniors, A Living at Home Program was founded in 1987 through a grassroots effort by area residents and community leaders to meet the changing needs of seniors for those over age 65 who live in the community.

The program brings neighborhood professionals and volunteers together with their elderly neighbors. Elderly program participants receive social, medical, health education, caregiver respite, companionship, or other support services. These services enable elders to live in their own homes for as long as possible and to delay or avoid placement into nursing homes.

Each year, nearly 100 volunteers share their time and talents and are matched directly with clients in a variety of different ways. Volunteers are extremely necessary in helping to fulfill our mission. The positions are important and meaningful for not only the senior, but also the volunteer.

Volunteers come from area churches, businesses, schools and individuals from the community. Their efforts help to fulfill the mission of helping older adults make their lives more independent, healthful and meaningful.

We couldn't do the exceptional work that we do, without the dedicated volunteers associated with our program. People, whatever their background and skills, have something in common --- humanity, patience, compassion and the desire to help others.

Volunteerism connects resources of the area with community needs and helps to stengethen and enhance the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood.

The Macalester-Summit Hill Senior Program volunteers come from all walks of life. They are people who provide weekly service or do what they can. Many volunteers have been a part of the senior program for several years, while others are just getting started with their volunteer work. Our flexible volunteer scheduling and varied assignments offer something for those working full-time or for those who have some available time during the weekday hours. We do appreciate and value any time you can invest in helping a senior in our community.

Volunteers really get connected to the clients that we serve. Some awesome friendships have developed for the young and the older, which truly benefits all involved. The clients are very appreciative for the wonderful things the volunteers do for them!
