The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Calhoun County, Inc. is to promote and foster increased literacy in Calhoun County and contiguous areas primarily through volunteer teaching and aid to the illiterate, semi-literate, and for those whom English is not their native language; to encourage and aid individuals, groups, or organizations desiring to increase literacy through voluntary programs.
Who We Are: Literacy Volunteers of Calhoun County, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation with a volunteer Board of Directors. Our staff includes one part-time program coordinator and many volunteers. We began as a full Literacy Volunteers of America affiliate in November 1992. Since the merger of LVA and Laubach Literacy in 2002, we are now an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America. Our affiliation with the national literacy organization gives us access to proven methods and materials for helping adult non-readers overcome illiteracy. We are funded through private foundations, corporations, and individuals. We receive no financial support from the national organization. What We Do: Literacy Volunteers of Calhoun County train volunteers to tutor adult non-readers, low level readers, and English as a Second Language learners through Basic Literacy training. Our tutor training sessions are held several times a year. These classes equip tutors with instructional materials, numerous approaches to teaching the adult learner, and an understanding for the adult who never learned to read. In addition to our One-on-One tutoring, we also provide Small Group tutoring and Workplace Education. All tutoring services are free and confidential. Literacy Volunteers of Calhoun County is vocal in the community about the problem of illiteracy. By raising awareness, we hope to find more adults who need our assistance, more volunteers to tutor our students, and more individuals who can contribute to eradicating illiteracy.
