Mission Statement

The mission of The Phillips Collection is to protect, exhibit, enrich, and interpret its exceptional collection of works of art in the modernist tradition for the benefit of local, national, and international audiences. The permanent collection and related exhibitions provide the focus for extensive public programming designed to enhance public pleasure and understanding, as well as for art historical research. In accordance with the vision of its founder, Duncan Phillips, The Phillips Collection is devoted to the primacy of the experience of great works of art in an environment that is intimate in scale and intellectually stimulating. Through changing presentations of a collection known for its quality and unity, it fosters opportunities to explore and enjoy aesthetic correspondences among works of art from different periods and places.

The Education Office of The Phillips Collection was established in 1985 to provide the museum with quality programs for adults and children. Volunteer Children s Docents have the opportunity to give tours to school groups as well as families and community groups. THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF THE VOLUNTEER CHILDREN S DOCENT Volunteer Children s Docents play an integral part in the museum and the community by introducing children in grades 1-8 to the creative world of modern art through exciting educational activities in the home-like setting of The Phillips Collection. Our Children s Docents are volunteers who like interacting with children, enjoy public speaking, and see the need to provide children in the community with interesting and educational museum experiences about art.
