Description
The Autism Society of Cumberland County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit incorporated organization for families of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An affiliate of the Autism Society of North Carolina, we provide family support through a wide array of services.
Founded as the "Society for the Autistic" during the mid 1980's, the organization was established by a small group of parents in Fayetteville, NC who wanted to become more knowledgeable about autism and improve the quality of life for their children. In 1996, the organization received its non-profit status, establishing it as the first local chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina to attain affiliate status.
The programs and activities of the organization are designed to inform and educate parents/caregivers and professionals, and provide referral, resource information, and opportunities for families. We help families find appropriate services through collaboration with numerous agencies within the county.
Through support groups, support parents, and parent education programs, the organization also provides families the opportunity by which to meet other families and professionals in the community, thereby affording them the ability to develop a network of support based on their individual needs. We offer conference scholarships for parents, a six-week summer day camp, classroom grants, Resource Directories, and a monthly newsletter.
Governed by a Board of Directors consisting of parents and professionals of individuals with autism, the Autism Society of Cumberland County, just as in its early years remains family-driven.
