Description

The Sykesville Gate House Museum collects, preserves, and interprets the history of Sykesville and the surrounding areas. Sykesville, a Main Street community, is located on the Patapsco River on the southern edge of Carroll County. Development of the town grew in 1831 when the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad extended its main line through "Horse Train Stop" which was later named Sykesville after one of the first businessmen in the area. The Gate House Museum facility was originally part of the Springfield Hospital Center, one of the nation’s largest state psychiatric institutions in the early to mid-1900s.
