Mission Statement

WTEF is a non-profit organization which, since 1955 has worked to improve the lives of thousands of at- risk young people through athletic, academic and life- skills training at DC Elementary and Junior High Schools and at the FitzGerald Tennis Center, home to WTEFâ  s Legg Mason Tennis Classic, Washingtonâ  s premiere menâ  s professional tennis event. WTEFâ  s programs keep kids off the streets, in school, and engaged in activities that improve their athletic and academic performance, and help them pursue academic or career goals.

WTEFâ  s PROGRAMS ARTHUR ASHE CHILDRENâ  S PROGRAM serves at-risk students in Elementary, and Junior High Schools in Wards 5 to 8. This after- school program combines tennis, literacy and life- skills lessons. Participants consistently achieve higher reading and self-esteem scores than their peers. TENNIS CENTER PROGRAM offers year-round free or low cost instruction and competition. It also contains an Hispanic Outreach effort. ARTHUR ASHE READING IS FUNDAMENTAL ROOM is only one ofâ  ---such programs in the nation. Its literacy program and donated library are free to all TENNIS CENTER PROGRAM participants. CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE, WTEFâ  s acclaimed college prep program, has for the seventh year in a row sent 100% of its graduating class to college on scholarships totaling over $2mm in scholarships. TEEN- ACE (Academic & Career Enrichment) Program provides personalized support to students who are seeking alternatives to college. WTEF ACADEMY is our elite program for our most committed student athletes, which combines education with advanced tennis training. SUMMER PROGRAMS combine tennis camp with education. Our OUTREACH CAMPS make our facilities available to other camp programs, and our MINI- CAMPS offer tennis to individuals.
