Mission Statement

One of this country's preeminent performing arts institutions, Dance Theater Workshop remains vigorously committed to maintaining its uncompromising mission: to identify and nurture talented emerging and mid-career artists working in diverse cultural contexts; to stimulate a broader audience and public context for these artists and their work; and to offer opportunities for these artists by providing an interactive community laboratory for the imagination and its essential, practical application to the world around us.

Description

DTW was founded in 1965 by Jeff Duncan, Art Bauman and Jack Moore as a choreographers' collective devoted to the sponsorship and practical support of the work of colleagues and early career artists. Anchored in Chelsea for 30 years, DTW has expanded its original vision to become a multi-faceted organization devoted to developing programs and resources which help independent artists grow professionally while increasing the public's involvement in the arts. Now entering its fourth decade as one of the most influential performing arts centers in the United States, DTW has supported three generations of this country's most talented artists. Nearly 1,000 artists have found an artistic home at DTW's BESSIE SCHÃ Â NBERG THEATER and DTW's programs have evolved into effectively established networks that enhance the lives of artists and the communities they serve. More than 200 concerts and exhibits by some 70 contemporary dance, theater, music, visual and video artists are sponsored annually by DTW in eight distinct Production Series, making it one of the most active producers in the country. Artists receive funding for new creations from DTW's First Light commissioning program. Here they have been given the opportunity to perform and hone their artistic talents in a supportive yet critically astute environment. Such notable artists as: Mark Morris, David Gordon, Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall, Ron Brown, Donald Byrd,
