The mission of Bronx International High School is to serve a diverse, multilingual student population of recent immigrants to the United States. We seek to provide each student with a language rich learning experience that moves them to a point where they can read, write and communicate effectively in English and their native language. Our students will learn to use their minds well to critically analyze and respond to complex real-world issues. They will use what they learn to become successful academically and professionally, and to become advocates for themselves and their communities.
Bronx International High School was the first New Century High School when it opened in the fall of 2001. The New Century High Schools are a network of smaller schools that offer more personalized learning while fostering community development. Bronx International is housed in the Morris Educational Campus, one of six small, effective public high schools. Ninth and tenth grade students (Junior Institute) attend four 70-minute classes in English, science, social studies and mathematics, a physical education class, and a 40-minute lunch period. In addition to a physical education class and a 40-minute lunch period, eleventh grade students (Senior Institute) attend two 2-hour classes â  in global studies and mathematics or United States history and science â  in preparation for the Regents exams. Twelfth grade students participate in internships that offer an experiential learning opportunity. Interdisciplinary teams of teachers are responsible for approximately 80 students each in the ninth and tenth grades and 30 students each in the eleventh and twelfth. They center instruction around a common theme and a set of essential questions to explore.
