Girls Leadership teaches girls the skills to know who they are, what they believe, and how to express it, empowering them to create change in their world.
For over twelve years, the Girls Leadership (GL) has awakened thousands of girls to a life of authentic leadership. Co-founded by bestselling author and girl-expert Rachel Simmons, we are a national nonprofit organization providing transformational programs for girls, their parents and caregivers, and their educational communities. Taught by credentialed instructors, GL’s programs are age-appropriate and progressive, addressing girls’ developmental needs from kindergarten through high school.
At GL, we teach girls to identify healthy relationships, communicate effectively, and develop a resilient response to conflict, challenges and mistakes. Recently recognized in the New York Times and on NBC’s Today show, GL is the only girls’ organization that places social and emotional intelligence at the core of its programming. Based in the San Francisco Bay area, we run programs across the country.
Working with Girls Leadership has been one of the most rewarding experiences I could ask for. Meeting with the staff of GL every day brought nothing but joy and the opportunity to work with such a dedicated group was a privilege. At GL there is a focus not just on professionalism but also fun when working to promote transformational education for young girls. Each of the staff at GL exemplifies its mission statement in the way they empower and inspire others like myself to create change. I'm sad that my time at GL was short but I continue to stay in touch with the wonderful people there and carry the lessons I learned wherever I go. I myself while working with GL gained valuable skills as a young woman that will help me thrive in my life both professionally and socially in the future. I am so grateful and couldn't recommend GL highly enough!
GL (or GLI when I interned a few years ago) is an organization comprised of passionate, collaborative folks who really do live what they teach -- they're committed to helping their staff (including their interns) develop the leadership skills necessary to succeed. During my time at GL, I worked with my supervisor to establish my goals and then tackled genuinely interesting projects that pushed me to expand my skill set and bolstered my confidence. Everyone at the organization, including the Executive Director, offered themselves as a resource for me, so that I felt I had both ownership and support at all times. When I was offered a full-time paid position at another education nonprofit at the start of my third month at GL, I negotiated a part-time start period so that I could continue interning at GL for another month -- I so enjoyed my time there and felt so personally invested in my work that I felt it was important to stay to see my projects to completion.
GLI is one of the most supportive and nurturing work environments I have ever had the honor of working in. While working as a Communications Intern with GLI, I was trusted with a large amount of responsibility and breadth of work experience, but it never felt overwhelming. The support of the GLI team really helped me complete all of my tasks and foster new, professional skills in the process. I owe a lot of my successive professional opportunities to the experiences I gained while with GLI - I cannot recommend them enough!
I can't speak highly enough about my experience as a Communications Intern at Girls Leadership: my role was dynamic, it was easy to see where my work made an impact, and opportunities for learning new skills was always a priority.
In addition to building practical job skills, I also got the benefit of experiencing the GL curriculum in practice. This organization practices what they preach, and the healthy communication style makes for a wonderful volunteer experience.

I am a long time supporter and volunteer with GLI! The program and organization are true to their mission and the staff/interns/volunteers are an absolute pleasure to work with (in addition to being inspiring!). GLI successfully equips girls with the social and emotional tools for effective communication across all aspects of their life. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested!
