Mission Statement

The Institute for Humane Education envisions a world in which people live humanely, sustainably, and peaceably. To create this change, IHE trains people to be humane educators, advances the field of humane education, and provides tools and inspiration for living an examined, meaningful life.

Description

Humane education teaches young people and adults to think critically, creatively and practically about how to live more humanely. Issues addressed range from worldwide challenges such as Darfur, global warming and factory farming to community concerns such as school bullies, litter and cruelty to animals. Our programs present novel approaches to engage people in a positive, persuasive manner. Master's in Education (m. Ed.) - In affiliation with Cambridge College, the Institute for Humane Education offers a complete training and degree program to prepare people to be humane educators. Degree candidates learn to teach about the most important issues of our time and present complex and sensitive information to students of all ages and backgrounds. For people who would like to gain expertise in humane education, but who don't wish to pursue the M.Ed. degree, IHE offers a distance-learning Humane Education Certificate Program (HECP). Workshops - Sowing Seeds workshops inspire and inform educators, activists and others to provide people with the insight they need to make truly thoughtful choices that help create a humane world for all people, animals and the environment. Participants learn powerful, enjoyable ways to reach out at schools, religious settings, events and other gatherings. The MOGO (More Good) workshop enables people in every field to live more humanely and create a better world. Resources - Publications include books such as "The Power and Promise of Humane Education," "Above All Be Kind: Raising a Humane Child in Challenging Times" and more, as well as free online guides for conducting humane education activities.
