Mission Statement
Founded by civil rights lawyers Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, the Innocence Project seeks the exoneration and release of innocent prisoners through the use of DNA testing. The Project also works to educate the public about the causes of wrongful convictions and to seek judicial, legislative, and policy reforms that will prevent future miscarriages of justice.
Description
The Innocence Project is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides pro-bono representation of the wrongfully convicted around the country. We only handle cases where postconviction DNA testing of evidence can yield conclusive proof of innocence. Founded in 1993, we operated as a clinic within the Cardozo Law School of Yeshiva University. We are now independent but still manage a clinic for Cardozo law school students who assist lawyers with their casework.
