Children First Intern Job Description (Revised 7.22) A Children First intern will have the unique opportunity to get a deep insight on how to effectively manage and support a nonprofit organization. Where they will have the opportunity to better understand for non-profit best practices, human resources, program management, board functioning, products, volunteer management, fundraising, and etc. The volunteer hours would be from 10-25 hrs a week. This is currently an unpaid internship, but we will help with class credit and potential funding through the University. This position van be virutal, hybrid and/or in-person. This position involves assisting the Executive Director and Operations Director with: This position involves assisting the Executive Director and Operations Director with: Fundraising Event Planning and Participation Grant Writing Donor Engagement and Management Facilities Management Human Resources Development Organizational and Structural Management Board Structuring and Development Board Governance Marketing including sharing and liking our platforms Data Management, Collection, Destruction, Retention and Research Organizational Strategic and Longterm Planning Other macro-level non-profit work Interns must be/use/have: Well organized, flexible, and creative Clear and direct communication and have a good understanding of their availability Able to engage well with others and brings enthusiastic energy to the team Initiative and follow through. Work will be done virtually and in person on a on-going individual basis, with weekly check-ins Good writing skills Able to manage and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner and understand how to prioritize those tasks efficiently to meet deadlines Able to ask for help if they need further clarity about a task Dedicated to the mission of Children First and constantly strive to think of thoughtful new ways to strengthen the organization Much of the tasks and projects will be behind the scenes work that is necessary for the organization to run smoothly. Individuals who have a passion for social work, nonprofit management, a positive attitude, and have a strong desire to help the Children First vision become a reality, will thrive in this position. Managing a nonprofit is a group effort in which interns play a key part. Our Children First interns work as a team to manage tasks. Internship hours may vary. Typical hours are from 10-25 hrs of a week, much of that schedule you will be able to determine, but there will need to be times that our schedules overlap (M-F 9-5pm). Interns will need: Access to their own computer, cellphone and internet A working knowledge of Microsoft Teams, The Google Suite and Canva, and/or a willingness to learn these platforms. A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained community volunteer who is appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of an abused or neglected child who is in foster care. The CASA volunteer gathers information about the child's situation, attends court proceedings and makes a written recommendation to the judge so that the judge has the information to make a decision about the child's future. How to become a CASA: Sincerely care for the well-being of children Be at least 21 years of age Complete an application, including references, interview and a brief autobiography Undergo a criminal background check Complete 40 hours of training Have good verbal and written communication skills Have the ability to be objective and non-judgmental Be available to attend court hearings Commit to CASA program for at least one year or until case is resolved Be sworn-in by the judge CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court and other settings. The primary responsibilities of a CASA volunteer are to: Gather information: Review documents and records, interview the children, family members and professionals in their lives. Document findings: Provide written reports at court hearings. Appear in court: Advocate for the child's best interests and provide testimony when necessary. Explain what is going on: Help the childunderstand the court proceedings. "Be the glue": Seek cooperative solutions among individuals and organizations involved in the children's lives. As one volunteer said: Be the glue that connects the pieces in a complicated child welfare system. Recommend services: Ensure that the children and their family are receiving appropriate services and advocate for those that are not immediately available. Bring concerns about the child's health, education, mental health, etc. to the appropriate professionals. Monitor case plans and court orders: Check to see that plans are being followed and mandated review hearings are being held. Keep the court informed: Update the court on developments with agencies and family members. Ensure that appropriate motions are filed on behalf of the child so the court knows about any changes in the child's situation. Our next CASA training class will begin February 23rd and go until March 23rd. During that time we meet once a week on Thursdays in the morning (10 am-1:45 pm) and in the evening (5:30 pm-9:15 pm). They would create and post content on social media platforms from the social media calendar. They would be strongly encouraged to attend events through-out the week to capture content and experiences. Attend weekly staffing meetings and monthly Social Media collaboration meetings. Where they will have the opportunity to better understand for non-profit best practices, human resources, program management, board functioning, products, volunteer management, fundraising, and etc. This position involves assisting the Executive Director and Operations Director with: Research Taking notes Organizing Materials for clients, volunteers and board members (binder creation) Editing letters, documents Updating and creating spreadsheets File creation and management on Microsoft Teams and Google Maintain supply room, notify Teams if materials are needed Assist the onboarding process of new volunteers and staff Answering and returning phone calls, distributing messages and diverting non-essential calls away from the Executive Director Sitting at the front desk Greeting and helping guests as they enter, reminding them of our COVID policy and notifying staff of their arrival Helping with mail distribution Assembly, removal or destruction of items (etc. Desk, chair) Create forms and graphics Take recycling material to CHARM Diaper pick up and organization Cleaning and sanitizing work areas Light housekeeping including weep the floors, blow the leaves off the porch, monitor trash and Taking out garbage and recycling when full maintain a tidy work environment through-out share spaces in the office.
