"To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling."
Hostelling International-Austin operates a 47 bed hostel in Austin. Located centrally on the southeast shore of Ladybird Lake on the hike and bike trail, HI-Austin has been serving hostellers visiting Austin since 1989.
In addition, to further our mission we host free travel classes in the Austin and San Antonio area. Our travel classes are curriculum based and include: World Travel 101, Women Traveling Solo, Europe on a Shoestring, US National Parks and Hostel Hopping, Family Budget Travel and more!
We also have a youth education program called Cultural Kitchen that involves youth coming to hostel, cooking a meal for hostel guests and meeting others from around the world.
I liked helping clean up at ladybird lake and on the trail because it gave me a sense of accomplishment and gave me happiness to be able to help the earth strive and help us see our world in a better light. The progect gave me a sense in that even though it is a small task it helps out in a bigger way than people think. It lets the earth know that you care about it. Also you might find cool things while cleaning up. I would greatly reccomend this volunteer opportunity and I look forward to doing this volunteer opportunity again in the future.
I have volunteered with Hostelling International for over 6 years. I served primarily as a Regional Board Member, National Board Member and activity volunteer. The board, staff and mission of this organization are wonderful. I feel passionately about travel as a path to personal and societal enrichment and fulfillment. I highly recommend devoting your precious volunteering time to this extremely rewarding effort.
