Mission Statement

The mission of the Union of Minority Neighborhoods is to foster civil liberties and human rights by working to ensure skilled, committed, grassroots leaders of color can effectively organize on issues of concern in their communities.

UMN is a multi-issue and hybrid organization. Based in Boston, we bring our mission to life by supporting new and emerging leaders and broad-based coalitions. Our goal is full civic engagement for all.

Description

Our programs are focused on organizing for social and institutional change and developing skilled organizers and new leaders. Our bottom line on any issue is civic engagement. UMN's core programs include

  • An organizing initiative to support communities of color in their struggles for quality public school education
  • A project to examine and learn from Boston's school desegregation era in order to build the foundation for a more unified future
  • Comprehensive CORI (criminal record) reform resulting in Gov. Patrick enacting an executive order to make substantial changes in the way that CORI’s are kept, accessed and used
