Mission Statement

We are passionate urban gardeners, composters, and educators. As the care-takers of the nationally acclaimed 1/2 acre organic demonstration Garden, Garden For the Environment, we strive to provide the entire SF community with organic gardening and home composting information and resources. We have Garden volunteer hours on Wednesdays, 10am-2pm and Saturdays, 10am-4pm! Please come by, for as long or as little as you wish, and get your hands dirty!

Thanks so much for your interest in volunteering with GFE! We'd love to have you come by and get your hands dirty with us! Every Wednesday and Saturday of the year we host volunteer hours unless it's a holiday or otherwise indicated on our website. It's good practice to check our website before showing up because sometimes we are away at conferences or other garden-related events.

Our volunteer hours are on Wednesdays from 10am - 2pm and Saturdays 10am - 4pm. You can show up for as long or as little as you wish! Just send us an email a few days before to let us know what day(s) you plan to show up and we'll send you a volunteer form just to ensure you have a fun and safe day in the garden! Be sure to bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty, closed-toe shoes, layers as it can swing from chilly to warm in a matter of moments, a hat, water bottle (we have potable tap water onsite) and sunscreen. Otherwise, we have all the tools you'll need as well as gloves!

We like to enjoy lunch together so if you plan to be around during lunch hours (12:30ish - 1pm) feel free to bring a bag lunch. Often times someone is heading to a favorite lunch spot around 9th & Irving so no problem if you forget your lunch.

We look forward to meeting you and sharing the garden with you
