Mission Statement

The mission of the Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center is to advance economic and social justice among the approximately 10,000 people who sell food and merchandise on the streets and sidewalks of New York City.

Description

We are a membership-based organization, founded and run by former and current vendors. We provide legal representation, advocacy, and grassroots organizing support to vendors across the city.

The Street Vendor Project also puts on the yearly Vendy Awards , which is both a fundraiser for SVP, a 501(c)(3), and a celebration of all street food vendors in New York City.

The Street Vendor Project is a unique opportunity to explore and understand the world of mobile vending -- an age-old tradition in New York City and other urban centers of the world that has created complex, underlying system that deserve appreciation and acknowledgment. Interacting with vendors and volunteers alike is always great. Sean, the SVP Director, Neera, the volunteer coordinator, and Darya, the community organizer are all full of knowledge and enthusiasm. The array of volunteers is always great, too, and they bring a lot of passion to the streets. The volunteer work is not particularly challenging, but still important, and definitely rewarding!
