Thank you for your interest in helping to transport animals for Ahimsa House! This is a very important aspect of our work. The types of situations where we most often need transport assistance include transferring an animal from a client or domestic violence shelter to a boarding facility, from a boarding facility to/from a foster home, from a foster home to/from a vet appointment, or returning an animal to a client at the end of the animal's stay with us. (Reuniting a client with his or her pet is one of the most rewarding experiences many volunteers describe!) Thank you for your interest in helping to transport animals for Ahimsa House! Our Emergency Animal Safehouse Services program provides temporary safe shelter for pets while their owners stay at a domestic violence shelter, where animals are not usually allowed. Our network of animal transporters helps us get pets to safety, drive them from the vet to their foster homes, and reunite them with their families once it's safe to do so. This is a very important aspect of our work and many of our volunteers find it to be one of the most rewarding experiences they have with us. There is nothing better than seeing the joy on the faces of both a family and their pet when you reunite them at the end of the pet's stay with us. Being a transport volunteer requires some patience and tolerance for the unexpected. We provide services across Georgia, so we never know when we will have a transport need in your particular area. Once you have joined our transporter network, you will be added to our database and you will receive emails with transport requests. It is up to you to decide whether you are able to assist with the request, and to notify us if you are able to do so. The situations we are helping with often change by the minute, and for this reason pick-up or drop-off locations may change, the day/time when the transport is needed may be moved earlier or later, or a transport may be canceled altogether. We know our volunteers have busy schedules, and we do not expect you to be able to accommodate every change that may occur--we just ask that you be prepared for some unanticipated events and that you be patient as we work to coordinate these transports. It is also important to understand that we do not usually know much about the animals that come into our care. Some may be fearful or aggressive due to abuse. Some dogs may have had little or no training. Some may be nervous riding in a car with someone they do not know. You do not need to be an expert about animals, but for everyone's safety, we require that all animals be contained during transport (leash and/or crate for dogs; carriers/cages for cats and other small animals), and we strongly recommend that all dogs be crated in the vehicle. Ahimsa House can provide these supplies if needed. Thank you again for considering joining our transport team! Please contact us if you have any questions, or to get started on the application, visit: http://ahimsahouse.org/transportpetstosafety/
