Mission Statement

Ahimsa House is dedicated to addressing the link between domestic violence and animal cruelty. We offer services and assistance to victims of domestic violence with pets in Georgia and work to raise awareness of this connection in communities throughout the state. To date (June 2023), Ahimsa House has provided over 170,000 nights of safe, confidential shelter for pets in need. With over 3,000 pets and around 1,900 pet owners assisted, Ahimsa House continues to grow in the number of families we've helped reach safety.

Description

Ahimsa (uh-him-sa) House is Georgia's first and only nonprofit organization that supports survivors of domestic violence with their pets as they seek safety. Since our inception in 2004, we have served more than 100 counties in Georgia and work in conjunction with domestic violence shelters statewide to handle the care and treatment of survivor's pets. Our services include up to sixty (60) days of temporary shelter for pets, routine or emergency veterinary care, pet transportation assistance, 24/7 crisis line support, assistance in obtaining pet friendly housing, and more! Once survivors are ready and able, they are reunited with their pet in confidentiality.

With less than only ten full time staff members, Ahimsa House depends heavily on the help of members in our communties to succeed in our mission. Volunteers are essential and work incredibly hard to assist survivors on the crisis line, transport pets between facilities, foster pets temporarily (with supplies and veterinary care provided by us!), and share our services to the public at community events. Additionally, we rely on the amazing partnerships we've made with animal hospitals, rescues, and boarding facilities throughout the state!

Ahimsa House relies heavily on individual donations, grants, and corporate sponsorships alongside receiving many in-kind donations of goods and services.

I enjoyed fostering for Candy the Shih Tzu while her mommy was getting settled. She was the sweetest little girl and adjusted to my other Shih Tzu's perfectly. I would definitely volunteer here again.

I have not yet volunteered but the idea of having a foster pet is just wonderful and I will recommend anyone who loves pets to this organization, just because the activity itself will be a good experience for families that are thinking about getting a pet or pet lovers period.
