This volunteer position contributes to the Mercer Island Thrift Shop’s success by maximizing store sales through skilled and efficient handling of apparel, shoes, and accessories. Job Description Provide friendly customer service while promoting thrifted goods Maintain an orderly dressing room area to prevent loss of product and encourage new looks for our customers Maintain a well-organized apparel sales floor Stock product to the sales floor and rotate merchandise Maintain visual standards and cleanliness of the department. Assist with executing the seasonal merchandise storage-to-floor plan. Communicate and cooperate with staff, volunteers, and management. Consistently apply safety, loss control and prevention techniques Consumer knowledge of designer brands, to identify high value donations, helps to maximize the value of contributions to our mission. Physical Requirements This volunteer position requires the ability to, bend, kneel reach, and lift up-to 30 pounds. Fine motor skills are needed for hanging, buttoning, zipping, writing, and tagging merchandise. Read, write, and communicate in a positive, professional manner. The ability to interact with customers in a friendly manner during sales hours. Mercer Island Thrift Shop (MITS) is seeking volunteers to become a regular part of their Cashier Team with a commitment of one 3-hour shift per week. MITS is a nonprofit business that values a culture of community involvement, volunteer skill development, and reducing our community footprint on the planet through resale; the best form of recycling. As a bustling group of 90 volunteers, staff team and management team, they are proud to provide the major source of funding for the City of Mercer Island’s department of Youth & Family Services (MIYFS). Shift opportunities are as follows, Sunday through Friday: Sundays: 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm \ 3:00 pm - 6:05 pm Mondays: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Tuesdays: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm \ 3:00 pm - 6:05 pm Wednesdays: 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm \ 3:00 pm - 6:05 pm Thursdays: 9:45 am - 1:00 pm \ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm \ 3:30 pm - 6:05 pm Fridays: 1:00 - 4:00 pm We provide full training on a modern P.O.S. system and a cashier training handbook you get to keep. MITS is cash-less for ease and prevent loss to focus on rebuilding the business. You can use our online app to schedule your shifts and time away or we can manage your specified times for you. The Donation Attendant/Material Handler contributes to the Mercer Island Thrift Shop’s success by maximizing store sales through skilled and efficient handling of incoming donations. Essential Job Functions Provide excellent customer service to patrons and donors Receive and distribute donations Maintain a well-organized production and receiving area Provide information to donors on acceptable donations according to the store’s best practice guidelines Maintain visual standards and cleanliness of the receiving area Stock product to the sales floor and rotate merchandise Communicate and cooperate with staff, volunteers and management Consistently apply safety, loss control and prevention techniques Handle the organization and clean up of work stations and equipment at the end of each shift. Educational Benefits This position provides experience working in the retail side of a nonprofit organization, working with a volunteer work force including people with disabilities. Gain knowledge in merchandising concepts, production processes, maximizing sales for a variety of consumer goods, business planning and reporting functions. Minimum Qualifications and Working Conditions Ability to stand and work with rigorous physical activity.
