The mission of Connor’s House is to support children with complex health care needs, together with their families, by creating a community of support that helps them to embrace each day and live life to its fullest.
Connor’s House was founded in September 2008 by Arun Chopra, Deborah Millard and Scott Millard and was incorporated in March 2009. Connor’s House, Inc. is a New Jersey Non-Profit Corporation recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the Internal Revenue Service under section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) of the tax code.
Connor’s House was founded in memory of Connor Scott Millard, a spunky 8 year old boy with significant medical and developmental challenges, whose strong desire to live a normal life and experience the world around him caused all those involved in his care to push the envelope of current treatment paradigms in order to allow him to live at home as much as possible.
The three co-founded Connor’s House based on the recognition that most families of children with complex health care needs and life-shortening conditions do not have all the supports and resources available that the Millard’s did and at some point become overwhelmed by the 24x7 care requirements of their children. There are currently few, if any, health care or support services readily accessible to these families outside of a strict hospital or long term care setting.
From the diagnosis of a life-shortening condition Connor’s House will provide a comprehensive program of family-centered care including medical, psychological, social, spiritual and bereavement support services and therapies. With a skilled, dedicated staff providing hands-on-care, families will be able to focus on enjoying life and one another. All services will be guided by the philosophies of pediatric palliative care and patient-and family-centered care.
Connor’s House will be a place where families can receive respite and symptom management support delivered in a friendly, home-like environment. Guests will stay and rest for short periods of time and have the opportunity to interact with other families also trying to give their sick kids the best care, and most complete life, possible. It will be a place to temporarily escape from daily routines and enjoy precious hours with the children, siblings and their extended families.
All Connor’s House services will be provided free-of-charge to the children and their families.
