Mission Statement

The mission of the Society is to foster stewardship of Maryland's natural heritage by conserving its natural history collections, educating its citizenry, and inspiring its youth to pursue careers in the natural sciences.

Description

To further its mission, the Society is establishing the Maryland Naturalist Center, which will promote ecological literacy by establishing a natural science collections center, by offering a social crossroads and a place for people interested in discovering more about nature, and by incubating, developing, and delivering team-based, long-term, intergenerational nature programs, in cooperation with other place-based organizations.

The Center will also serve the region through neighborhood nature programs, which will support children, young adults and their mentors by cultivating interest and curiosity about the places where they live: backyards, neighborhoods, and parks.

Presently, we are conducting the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas project with Maryland Department of Natural Resources in all parts of the State and are in the early stage of establishing a network and training experiences to support volunteer community naturalists throughout the state.
