Mission Statement
The mission of Students Run Portland is to challenge at-risk secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the 26.2 mile Portland Marathon and other long distance running events in their communities.
Description
Modeled on the highly successful Students Run L.A., Students Run Portland is an after-school program that provides students, at no cost, with the training and gear they need to complete long distance running events. Through the training process, students build self-esteem and resiliency skills which improves their performance at school, reduces their use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs and improves their overall health. Students who are at-risk of dropping out, are more likely to complete high school.
