Mission Statement

To expand both the real and perceived choices and opportunities for local youth from low-income families, to add significant financial support to the collective resources of Brattleboro Summer Food Service Program sites, to broaden the experience of youth of low-income families. We seek to provide a balance of local and regional activities that are both educational and exciting. By providing incentives that youth value, we intend to increase the number of youth receiving at least one nutritionally banaced meal weekdays. Participants will return to school happy and willing to share their own "How I spent my summer vacation" stories. Brattleboro Housing Opportunities, Inc. will provide special after-school programs that will provide continuity between summers and the opportunity for youth to develop competency while providing an outlet for artistic expression.

Description

Brattleboro Housing Opportunities Inc. Youth Enrichment and Prevention Program operates in conjunction with the Brattleboro Summer Food Service Program. Shame often prevents hungry children from visiting a free lunch site. When there is a special activity offered that includes lunch, it's more acceptable among peers to participate. SYEPP provides meaningful enrichment activities that increase social skills and prevent at-risk behaviors such as stealing, sexual activity, fighting, drug use, as well as depression, low self esteem, and school failure. Through the hard work of BHO partners and volunteers a transformation of this community is taking place. This is the story of people working together to make this a stronger, safer community. There are a variety of ways to contribute to this community effort. I urge everyone in our community to help us generate the hope and pride that is replacing the despair in the poorer neighborhoods of Brattleboro through these programs and to work together to ensure a bright prosperous future. In a time when we hear so much about society's problems, I hope you will share this story of people from all walks of life working together to turn their neighborhoods around into communities of caring.
